About East Anglian Chambers

Chambers were established in Colchester in 1946 by the late Gerald Hines QC to provide a service so that local solicitors and their clients would not have to make the journey to London. Colchester was about as close to London as the then rules of the South Eastern Circuit would permit for the formation of new sets of chambers.  The town also held Quarter Sessions, had a County Court, and (not entirely coincidentally) was Gerald's home.

The service proved so popular and the demands so great that we have, over the years, responded by opening premises in Norwich in 1972 and most recently in Chelmsford (both Tier 1 court centres), as well as taking over existing chambers in Ipswich in the early 1980s. Throughout we have pursued an active policy of recruitment which has seen our numbers grow from the original three tenants to our present size.

The quality of our past recruitment and the enhanced reputation of chambers which followed has seen many former members take up full-time judicial appointments, and they sit (or have sat) across the region and beyond. A number of current members of chambers hold part-time judicial or tribunal office.

With our comprehensive resources, up-to-date communications technology and professional management we have earned an outstanding reputation througout East Anglia and beyond for the quality of the advocacy and advice our members routinely provide.
